Panic Disorder (PD) is characterized by repeated attacks of panic which seem to "come out of the blue". Individuals with Panic Disorder often fear that their panic attacks might cause them to have a heart attack or stroke, to go crazy, or to lose control. Symptoms can include heart palpitations, chest pain or discomfort, sweating, trembling, tingling sensations, feeling of choking, fear of dying, fear of losing control, and feelings of unreality.

Panic disorder often occurs with agoraphobia, in which people are afraid of having a panic attack in a place from which escape would be difficult. This can lead to widespread avoidance of public places.
